Some of our local high school students travelled to Salt Lake City to watch the debate live at the University of Utah debated the Prosecution of Polygamy. Here are a few of their thoughts. fordham-debate-jaclyn-1 fordham-response-marie-11
Local School’s Mass Media Class
November 3, 2008 by natalie
I enjoy seeing young people freely express, in thought, the things that go on around them. Our young adults see the
the hypocricy of the larger world that feels to judge us by their motives.
Bravo to this class and their teacher for giving them the opportunity to see the legal and political processes of our day. Bravo to their reasoned thinking.
Good work kids!
Jaclyn goes to the heart of Ms. Hamiliton’s opinion. By listening to all of the myths, half truths, and outright lies that are abundant in the media, and people that have become disenchanted and negative, she has decided she knows what are the best life choices for our women and children. If she were able to hear and see our lives, and understand why we love plural marriage, and that our children can be very happy, positive, productive and informed through education, maybe she could moderate her opinion. For us, our children are the most improtant aspect of our lives. Still, smay women have incredible careers, with the view of being of great vlaue and service to others through their work. I, personally, know may of these very women. Some women and children do, indeed, decide this is not what they want, but maintain good relations with their family, and can speak well of this lifestyle. I look forward to reading Marie’s as well.
Marie also wentt to the fallacy of Ms Hamiliton’s opinion. Mr Tarkenton made the points very succinctly about proof and not using assumption, rumors and people that accuse becuase they just don’t like or agree with the culture, in going forward with prosecutions. He stated they cannot paint everyone in the culture with the same broad brush. That has been proven.
We are trying very hard in a world-wide society where in marriage is going through a revolution of sorts. No longer is everyone accepting the Molly and me and baby makes three in my blue heaven kind of family. There are many single parents, mixed families, sometimes no biological parent in the home. artificial insemination, many abortions, fewer children “planned”. same-sex parents, children who do not know their paternity. etc. Many societies value plural marriage, but public opnion is very strong right now against this principle, so we do what we can to nurture and protect our familes.
Mass Media was without a doubt my favorite class, I am so glad to see that she ended up with at least a FEW students this year. We were her largest Mass Media class to date, our 07-08 class had 25 people. We studied the significance of shakespeare in old and modern cultures, and got to step into the shoes of his characters. I am proud to say that you will never find a person more qualified to teach communication courses than Mary Hammon. She leaves a lasting impression on each of her students. The skills I learned in school that are the most significant in my everyday life aren’t things like math and history, they are the set of social skills I learned from her Mass Media Class.
