“It’s true that the Utah ruling is one of the latest examples of a national trend away from laws that impose a moral code. There is a difference, however, between the demise of morality laws and the demise of morality. This distinction appears to escape social conservatives nostalgic for a time when the government dictated whom you could live with or sleep with. But the rejection of moral codes is no more a rejection of morality than the rejection of speech codes is a rejection of free speech. Our morality laws are falling, and we are a better nation for it.”
I think people object to polygamy partly because of fear of abuse of the women and partly because mainstream christian church has been promoting monogamy for centuries. In Tanzania it is allowed for all regardless of religion to practice polygamy. It is regulated in Marriage Act 1971 ” permitted with consent of first wife; upon registration, parties are to declare whether marriage is polygamous, potentially polygamous, or monogamous, and marriage may be ‘converted’ to polygamous or monogamous by joint declaration.” To me it is high time that there is a very public debate about polygamy without the hysteria of media finding the very dark side of forced marriage. Women practicing polygamy and their children needs legislation to give them both rights and protection.
It really is very simple. If I as a non polygamist demands rights and freedom to live as I want, how can I dictate rules for others to do the same?
Poligamy was a Biblical practice until in influence of the cult of the catholic church took over. There are 52 Biblical examples of polygamy people with some being his chosen. If you believe the scriptures are unchanging yesterday, today and tomorrow then why would you not accept polygamy. Nowhere does it condemned however a few were condemned on how they ran there house. Solomon had 900 wives but was only condemned for allowing his wives to influence Isreal with there foreign idols. David was married when he got Basheba but he commited murder to get her. The present churches are still living under that brainwashing that polygamy equals adultery. However I do believe there has to be a set of laws on what is moral as a guide for living as long as they are valid and correct.
